Camp Eureka!
Motto: Scientia est potentia - Knowledge is power
Join us this summer for our continuing voyage into Camp EUREKA! We will explore the world around us through physical activities, arts, crafts, and field trips, learning science, history, and important character traits. For those of you who like to know how things work, for those that always ask why? For those who like to read, to explore, to imagine, and don't mind acting a little "geeky" sometimes, this camp is definitely for you!
*Camp Eureka is limited to only 25 scientists. Register early!

Camp Themes
6/7-11: 3, 2, 1...Blast Off!!
Field trip: Airport or Air field...tour and talk with pilots
Join us for a week as we explore flight in all of its forms. Build the best paper airplanes, design and construct air cars, launch your own water-powered rockets, and see how humans have realized their dream of flying.
6/14-18: Myth Busters
Field trip: Shasta Dam Tour
Like our favorite Discovery Channel heroes, we will give our own go at debunking myths and try to explain the why's and how's of some zany scientific matters. Come prepared to experiment and problem-solve, and always be ready for some good laughs- because like the show, things don't always work out like you think they will.
6/21-6/25: Natural Disasters
Field trip: Lassen Park
Unleash the awesome power of the elements this week as we explore the more destructive side of nature. From volcanic eruptions to hurricanes, rockslides to tornadoes, tsunamis and thunderstorms: see how these events take place, and how they can impact the world we live in. We will explore first hand as we travel to Mt. Lassen, an active volcano!
6/28-7/2: Biohazard Battle
Field trip: Whiskeytown Lake
Yuck, germs and bacteria! Join us as we explore the world of healthy and harmful bacteria and germs. We will have a local scientist demonstrate fun experiments and will learn about how bacteria works in nature. We will even conduct our own experiments after taking samples from Whiskeytown lake, local creeks, and the Sacramento River.
7/5-7/9: Edible Experiments
Field trip: Hawes Farms
Food is great...not only is it delicious, it can provide a vast array of fun science experiments as well. From cabbage chemistry to mold studies, from the power of compost to the workings of pollination, we will explore and learn as we see how food is used in science.
7/12-7/16: Motion Mania
Field trip: Viking Skate
From catapults to rollercoasters, bikes to roller-skates, join us as we explore principles of motion and the science behind how things move.
7/19-7/23: Sound Science
Field trip: Shasta College Music Dept.
Sounds are all around us, in music, nature, and in many of the ways we communicate. Explore how sound works, experiment with the science of sound waves, create your own instruments, and join us for other crazy experiments dealing with noise in all of its glory.
7/26-7/30: Industrious Insects
Field trip: Honey Bee Farm
They're inside, outside, they're everywhere! Bugs! Some of these creatures frighten us, others intrigue us, and some actually stun us with their beauty. Join us this week as we look into the exciting world of bugs, and even take a trip to see some local bees in action.
8/2-8/6: Wilderness Explorers
Field trip: Kayaking @ Whiskeytown Lake
Explore the natural world around you, plants, animals, and the wonders of the earth. Join us as we study the ecology of our area, examine the effects of erosion on our lakes and rivers, and study the art of nature through Fibonacci patterns. Also, we will have the opportunity to learn basic kayaking skills, and then adventure onto Whiskeytown to try out our new skills.
8/9-8/13: Super Hero Science
Field trip: Party ExtraordinAIR
Super heroes and villains battle across our favorite movies and comic books, and now we can learn how they do what they do. That's right, join us as we take a look behind the science of superheroes. Learn how our favorite good guys and bad guys pull off their amazing feats, and perhaps learn a trick or two yourself.
